Going after your health goals can be confusing, stressful and lonely. Here are 3 mistakes you’ve made and how to never make them again.

In 2015 I started having some uncomfortable, and frankly embarrassing, issues with my stomach and digestion.

It started slowly and then all of a sudden I’d be rushing to the bathroom 10 minutes after I ate. #TMI (I’m a nutritionist, sometimes I forget talking about poop isn’t normal to everybody)

I was in the first year of a new relationship and I would worry that if I ate the wrong thing when I was at his house I would be in a really awkward position.

At work I would be so bloated that I could barely walk because my stomach hurt. 

The worst part though – It was so random that I had no idea what was causing it. One day a coffee would be fine and then next it would have me running to the bathroom. Even seemingly fine things like fruit were hit or miss.

Basically I’m saying I had a problem that needed to stop and my goal was to get my digestion in order.

Today I can happily say that these problems are a thing of the past because I took important steps to get myself closer to my goal. 

To get my digestion back into shape I started to eat clean, whole foods 85% of the time by adding meal planning and prep into my weekends. I wanted to reach this goal asap (obviously) so I jumped in with both feet.

You didn’t make your goal specific

This is THE BIGGEST mistake people make when they’re going after their health goals. 

  • ‘Eat better’ is not a goal.
  • ‘Exercise more’ is not a goal.
  • ‘Lose some weight’ is not a goal.

Why? Because they’re too vague.

What does ‘better’ mean? How about ‘more’ or ‘some’? 

There’s nothing to define these goals by so you don’t actually know if you’re on track or when you meet them.

  • ‘Eat whole foods 80% of the time’
  • ‘Exercise five days a week’
  • ‘Lose 25 pounds’

Those are goals!

These goals are specific so you know exactly when you’re off track and you know when you meet the goal or not.

If you eat out every night for a week you will know that you aren’t meeting your goal of 80% whole foods.

When you skip four workouts it’s obvious they you can’t workout 5 days this week.

If you lose 15 pounds in 5 months you know that you’re not on track to reach your goal.

And that leads me to my next point….

You didn’t choose a ‘due date’

You need to have a due date for your goal.

This is the date when you will reach your goal by.

Your due date depends on what your goal is.

If your goal is to eat whole food 80% of the time that can happen as quickly as one week, or can be spread out over three. It’s something to always have in the back of your mind week to week.

If your goal is to lose 25 pounds you need to know when you will reach that goal. 

Three weeks? You know that’s impossible to do in a healthy way.

1 year? That’s too long and you’ll lose motivation.

5 months? That’s a perfectly healthy 5 pounds a month and it’s not so far away that you’ll lose track of your ambition.

You didn’t decided how you were going to reach it

This is a huge mistake that a lot of people make.

You need to have a plan!

When you know exactly what you’re going to do to get closer towards your health goal you cut out room for failure.

When you have a plan and you stick to it there’s no room for ‘I don’t feel like it today’ or ‘I don’t know what to do at the gym’ or ‘I have no healthy food in the house so I’m getting pizza’. 

If your goal is to lose 25 pounds you need to know how you’re going to do that. Walk 5k every morning before work? Pack a salad for lunch everyday? Go to spin class on Mondays and Wednesdays? Meal prep on Sunday?

If your goal is to workout 5 days a week, what will you do and when? Cardio Monday, Wednesday and Friday? Zumba on Saturday mornings? Strength training at the gym Tuesday and Thursday? Sunday Runday?

You need to know exactly how you’re going to reach your health goal.

So all together…

You need to be specific about what your goal is, you need to know when you will reach your goal by and you need to know exactly how you’re going to reach it. 

All of these are super easy to figure out but will have a huge impact on your success.

Bonus Mistake 
You didn’t know your ‘why’

Your ‘why’ is the reason that motivates you to work towards your health goal.

You’re why could be:

  • revenge on your ex that told you you weren’t attractive since you gained weight
  • fitting into your high school jeans for your 10 year reunion
  • making your mom eat her words after calling you fat at Easter dinner

Ya, these all could be your why, but they shouldn’t be.
