The Smoothie Series: Energizing Green Smoothie
In the afternoon when I’m looking for a pick me up or quick snack to keep me going till dinner I like to make this smoothie. If you ever find it difficult to get enough servings of fruit and veggies this has a ton in it so enjoy that carb fest for dinner! It also packs an energy punch so it’s great when you’re feeling lethargic. I bounce around the house like a crazy person after drinking this.
Ingredients (I don’t measure so all amounts are approximate
- Steeped Green Tea- about 16 ounces or a regular tea cup
- Banana – large
- Green Apple – small to medium sized
- Cucumber – three inch piece
- Frozen Kale and Spinach – two handfuls
- Spirulina – half a teaspoon
- Lots of Ice
While the tea is steeping I cut up my apple and cucumber into small pieces to help the blender. If you have a high powered blender you can probably skip this step. If I don’t slice them the peel stays in big pieces and it gets chewy. Then everything gets tossed into the blender. Make sure to include lots of ice if you haven’t cooled the tea to avoid a hot smoothie (unless that’s what you’re into). You could also keep a pitcher of brewed tea in the fridge.
I buy greens in large bags and then freeze them so I don’t have to worry about them going bad before I get to them. If you’ve never had spirulina before start with a small amount – a little goes a long way and can cause an upset stomach if you’re too gung ho. It also turns your smoothie a really dark green color (darker than the picture at the top) so I wouldn’t suggest drinking this if you don’t have access to a tooth brush since you might get some on your teeth and tongue.
